Upper Mission South Perimeter Road has been approved

The new perimeter road will connect the top of Gordon Drive with West Stewart Road to the North.

At the top of Gordon Drive in Kelowna the road ends at the gates to the South Slope area of Upper Mission. A favourite amongst hikers and mountain bikers the south slopes is a busy place in the summer months with recreational use.  Jack Smith Lake in the winter is often busy with skating and outdoor fun.

After the Okanagan Mountain fire much of the South Slope now has spectacular views down into the valley and overlooking Okanagan Lake.  The area has been one of the larger residential construction neighbourhoods in the city. Single family residential neighbourhoods like Trestle Ridge, The Ponds, Village of Kettle Valley, The Vistas and South Ridge have been experiencing a boom in home construction as lots for sale are quickly snapped up. Needless to say the pressure on the only two roadways into the Upper Mission has been steadily increasing.

The new South Perimeter Road that has been approved this month by the City of Kelowna will potentially relieve some of the traffic pressure off of Gordon Drive and Lakeshore Drive, Chute Lake road corridor.

The yet to be named South Perimeter Road follows the bench behind Jack Smith Lake and Kuiper’s Peak Mountain Park and crosses Bellevue Creek above the Crawford Falls trail system.  The road follows the curve of the land and sweeps north towards Crawford Estates to join Stewart Road West. From here you can enter into East Kelowna or drop back down into the city on Bedford Road and Casorso Road or follow Crawford Road down to DeHart Road.

This new access will provide landowners and developers in the Upper Mission with much needed access into new neighbourhoods that are on the planning boards. Once The Ponds development is completed there are plans to continue up the slope much like the transition above The Village of Kettle Valley. Expect to see submissions with the city for new single family lots and some higher density townhome or condo projects for this area once this roadway is complete. The Budget for the Roadway project is approximately $10 Million.
